Newman Farm Heritage Berkshire Pork is located in the Southern Ozarks on the Missouri/Arkansas border near Myrtle, Missouri. We are a small family farm where raising the highest quality purebred Berkshire Pork and Dorper Lamb is our only business.
Today so many in the pork industry are using the terms naturally and susbainably produced when the vast number of these pigs are being produced indoors along with the use of gestation and farrowing crates. Then the terms naturally and sustainably produced should mean diddly squat in reference to the way these pigs are raised. At Newman Farm all animals are bred, farrowed and raised outdoors on pasture.
The point we want to make is that not all Berkshire pork is created equal. We work hard to keep the integrity of the Heritage Berkshire, the cross breeding of Heritage breeds does not keep the integrity that each breed is known for. Along with the fact that many who originated this pork movement no longer breed, farrow or produce Heritage breeds, but have found it easier to purchase feeders and raise commodity pigs. In order to be marketed with the name "Heritage, Heirloom or Sustainably Produced" the animals must be 100% purebred and originate from old line genetics that are raised 100% outdoors on pasture. Too many that are marketing niche pork are telling a story and marketing what they don't have.
At Newman Farm our pork carries the Certified Humane Raised and Handled logo. The Certified Humane Raised and Handled program is the only farm animal welfare and food labeling program in the U.S. dedicated to improving the welfare of farm animals from birth through slaughter. Many producers in the livestock industry have fought against third-party certification programs (seems that they just don't get it), underscoring efforts to support better animal husbandry. By controlling the genetics and using our own production standards our goal has always been to produce the highest quality, greatest tasting Berkshire pork product.
